Weirdos

Well, I guess y'all are wondering who I am. (Hey, I was just in Texas, remember? haha) The name's Lindsey, hence My Lindsanity. It's the nickname Perez gave to Lindsay Lohan and how could I not use it? My partner in crime for all of our little projects is Jeremy, the future hubby (I hate the word fiance).

We were hooked up, unwillingly, by our mothers because we both are "weird", so thanks guys. Really. But that should give you some insight about us. Weird. I lived in Ohio, he lived in North Carolina. And somehow our mothers were right, and our weirdness just seemed to go together. After countless flights, and 10 hour drives, we decided it was time for me to make the move down. We got our little Harley-monster around that time too. He was a whopping 8 pounds.

Now he's 92 pounds of twisted steel and sex appeal... creeepy.

Jeremy bought a brand new house a couple months before we met, so our projects are trying to upgrade the "builder-grade" things around the house. We both tend to start a whole lot of projects at once, but eventually make our way to finishing them. Eventually being the key word in that sentence. So, there ya have it. Two young kiddos trying to make this house our home while keeping you posted on all of our adventures.

Where in the world are Lindsey and Harley

Well it's been an eventful couple of weeks. I had finals which went well, and ended with a presentation, yuck! Then said goodbye to Jeremy :( on Tuesday and headed up to Ohio with the Harley-monster. Ten hour drives are no fun by yourself! Wednesday was followed with a flight in first class (our plane was delayed so we got hooked up!) to Texas to see my cousin get married! Yee haw!

And had a blast. We left on Sunday and returned to all of our doggies. I stayed in Ohio for about a week and helped my mom work on some projects. I learned all of my sweet decorating skills from my madre.  Here's what you can look forward to in the next couple of days: a post on a kid's chalkboard table, the finishing of the bench we built for mother's day, a painted bathroom, and dirty dogs!

Round Table: Part Two

So after getting a few questions about the round table I made, I figured I would just create a new post to make things a little easier. While making the table I discovered some of the cuts to be wrong (blog post about it here). Here's the cuts I found wrong more specifically:

A) 4 - 1x2 @ 28 1/2" (1x2 Part of the Legs)

B) 4 - 1x3 @ 28 1/2" (1x3 Part of the Legs)

The table is supposed to be 30 inches high and if you buy the pre-cut unfinished feet from Lowe's or Home Depot like I did which are 4 3/4 inches themselves, then the table without a top is already going to be over 33 inches tall. In the picture diagram that she created in step one of the table it says 23 3/4 inches, which I just happened to discover. That would have been handy while building huh? haha. I think I cut mine slightly longer than that. My table sits at around 32 inches, which works just fine.

The other trouble I had with the table was finding a table top! Every store we went to sold a 48 inch pine table top for over $200. I wasn't about to pay that when I could have gotten the real table from Pottery Barn for not much more. So with a little creative brainstorming between JJ and myself we decided to cut the top out of a sheet of Oak plywood which ran around $40 (I think). We also had to buy a router to round out the edges. That cost about $60.

JJ was the table top guy so I'll try and describe from memory what he did. He first pulled an old school move from elementary school to draw a perfect circle. He picked a point in the middle of the board and attached a string that he cut out to be 24 inches and drew the circumference. Well, actually he used a board, not a string. Why? I'm not sure because a string would have been so much easier, but I walked out too late to tell him, haha. He then used the jigsaw to cut a rough edge around the circle line. Followed by the router to give the plywood a smooth, fancy-schmancy look. Here's a picture after the routed edge:

 

So, it was $40 for the oak plywood, which we had extra to use for other projects, and $60 for the router which we can also use on other projects. A much cheaper and stronger solution than a $200 dollar PINE top.

Since we were using pine for the rest of the table I put a wood conditioner on it before to harden it  up a bit. For stain, we used a custom Minwax color from Lowe's. We wanted to match the bamboo blinds we have in the kitchen. I put to coats on with a rag and followed it with spray polyurethane also by Minwax. And let me tell you, I will never put polyurethane on any other way. The spray went on so easy and dried super fast! It's more expensive but so worth it.

So after all this, at least this way we both get credit for building the table, me the bottom and JJ the top.

Woo! My blog just got a much needed makeover! So much better! Not done though, but like any room in a house is it ever done? (So cheesey haha) I got the background and gadgets from Shabby Blogs --all for free! I made the header myself on Paint. How DIY of me haha. Hope you like it!

Coffee Table or Bench?

My sister, Julie, has been awaiting my upcoming trip to Ohio for one reason. No, not to see me, but for me to bring up the table that she requested me to build months ago. She sent me plans for the Rustic Bench, again from knock-offwood.com. JJ and I went to Lowe's and got all the wood for $21, not including the stain and began to build. The plans are fairly easy until you reach the ending, where we kinda winged it. I measured the boards and JJ cut on the miter saw I got him for our 2 year anniversary.

That's me pretending to cut, haha. Once we, I mean JJ, got the boards cut, he pre-drilled the holes and I screwed in the screws. We're quite the team. It was both of our first times countersinking screws and we now will forever do it to everything else we build. It looks so much more professional! I wish I could go back and do it to the other tables! But anyways, we soon came up with the legs:

This is about the time when I called my mom to wish her a happy Mother's Day. I told her we had started to build the bench and she thought Julie wanted a coffee table. So after a bit of confusion, it turned out my sister doesn't know how to read--considering she sent me the plans for the Rustic BENCH. It worked out ok, because my mom has a thing for benches and gladly said she would take it. So back to building we went. Everything went really smooth until we got to the cross supports. Pain in the rear. We couldn't figure out the angles, neither of us are very "mathy." So after struggling for a good half hour, I just laid the boards down where they would go and drew the angled line. And surprisingly it worked!

All that's left is staining or painting, whichever my mom chooses. I'll post pictures of what she decides. This bench was very easy and ended up very sturdy. JJ said he wish we didn't have to give it away! Haha. Looks like we'll be making one, or something similar to it in the near future!

We've got chairs!

Pretty spiffy, eh? I searched and searched and searched and found these puppies two for $99 with free shipping! Amazing. We only ordered two, just in case we didn't like them. I had originally wanted parson chairs, and in the future still do, but for now these look pretty good! Can't beat that price either!

I also am super excited that my table was featured on knock-offwood.com's bragging board! And I want to welcome and thank everyone that's coming from there and checking out my little blog!

So sorry for the lack of posting. We've been super busy lately! Last week was extremely eventful, which led to a giant celebration this weekend, and this week is finals week. So I promise to get back on a more normal posting schedule sometime soon. Oh, and the picture is the morning after our celebration. Our friends parked their truck and camper in the backyard! Keepin' it classy, as always. A pretty neat party, huh. Not like when I lived at college- natty cans and red cups all throughout the yard. Kept the bums busy though.
